Michelin are the first tyre manufacturer to announce an investment into a sustainable product. They've said that by 2048 all of their tyres will be recycled, and made with 80% sustainable materials.

Currently Michelin tyres are made using 28% sustainable materials which includes 26% bio-sourced, and 2% recycled. To reach 80% sustainable materials they are investing in research programmes into bio-sourced materials such as wood, straw and beet in their Biobutterfly programme, working with Axens and IFP Energies Nouvelles.

In 2018, the recovery rate of vehicle tyres is around 70%, with 20% being used as energy and the remaining 50% being recovered as recycled materials which are used to make other products such as playground surfaces. They plan to achieve 100% recovery and recycle rate by developing new partnerships, identifying new ways to recycle tyres, and building new outlets to do so.

If Michelin achieve their goals it will save the equivalent of 33 million barrels of oil and one month of France's energy use per year.

They are also looking at an airless tyre made with the bio-sourced and recycled materials, and a tread that can be renewed with a 3D printer. With all these exciting innovations happening we can't wait to see how things develop in the future!
