After reporting three consecutive months of decreases to the average scrap car price, June has seen a small increase! The average price for a scrap car increased by just 1% in June compared to May. Prices are now back above $550.
Year on year prices increased by 11% compared to June 2021. Early signs show that prices will maintain into July, though as always with scrap metal prices, they can suddenly drop.
The value of scrap cars is dependent on various factors, including the global demand for scrap metal, any reusable parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition and even the location of your car.

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Australia. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The top model scrapped – The Holden Barina was the most frequently scrapped car at CarTakeBack recycling centres in June, it’s the first time we’ve seen this model take the top spot. The average age of Holden Barinas scrapped was 16.8. The average scrap value of a Holden Barina was above the general average at $601!
