The high scrap car prices in March slipped in April and have slipped further in May. The average price for a scrap car decreased by 5% in May compared to April, that’s a drop of $29. Though prices fell, they are still considerably above $500 and are higher than those in 2021.
Year on year prices increased by 12% compared to May 2021. Early signs show that prices will maintain into June, though as always with scrap metal prices, they can suddenly change.
The value of scrap cars is dependent on various factors, including the global demand for scrap metal, any reusable parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition and even the location of your car.

It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Australia. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The top model scrapped – The Toyota Corolla was the most frequently scrapped car at CarTakeBack recycling centres in May, taking the top spot from the Holden Astra. The average age of Toyota Corollas scrapped was 20. The average scrap value of a Toyota Corolla was $734!
