Prices on offer for scrap cars have yoyoed over recent months and unfortunately, September is no exception. After reporting a boost in August, September’s prices have taken a hit. The average price for a scrap car decreased by 5% compared to August. September’s prices, though still above $500, are the lowest average price we’ve recorded this year.
Though prices have fallen month on month, year on year prices remained the same.
The value of scrap cars is dependent on various factors, including the global demand for scrap metal, any reusable parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition and even the location of your car.

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Australia. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The top model scrapped – The Holden Astra was the most frequently scrapped car at CarTakeBack recycling centres in September. The average age of Astras scrapped was 17.9 and the average scrap value was in line with the general average at $511.
The top 5 makes of car scrapped – September saw Ford overtake Toyota into second position.
